The cheapest travel eSIM: how to actually compare

Count per gigabyte, not per package

A 1 GB package at 39 kronor and a 5 GB package at 89 kronor look like different products, but one costs 39 kronor per gigabyte and the other barely 18. Always divide price by data before comparing two providers, or you are comparing packaging.

Do not buy more than you need just because the unit price falls. Unused data cannot be saved for the next trip, so a larger package is cheaper per gigabyte and more expensive in practice if you use half of it.

Three costs that do not show in the price

Currency. Most international eSIM services price in dollars. Paying with a Swedish card adds your bank's conversion mark-up, often one to two percent, and the figure on your statement differs from the one on the site. A price in kronor is the price you pay.

VAT. Prices quoted excluding VAT look lower in a comparison and become 25 percent higher at checkout. Swedish consumer prices must be shown including VAT, and that is the figure to compare against.

Validity. If it starts at purchase, the days tick down while you are still at home. If it starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, you get every day you paid for. Two packages at the same price and the same number of days can therefore be worth different amounts.

Why is an eSIM cheaper than roaming?

Because an eSIM buys data from an operator in the country you are in, at that country's price. Roaming outside the EU is billed per megabyte by your Swedish operator at a price set to deter.
