Networks and coverage
TIM, Vodafone and WindTre cover the country. Cities have good 5G, and the rail corridors between Milan, Florence and Rome are well served.
In the Dolomites and Apennines the signal follows the valleys, and inland Sardinia and parts of Sicily grow thinner. The Amalfi coast road has gaps between towns.
How much data do you need?
With a Swedish plan that includes EU roaming you normally need no eSIM. That applies to all of Italy including Sardinia and Sicily.
The exceptions are the same as elsewhere in the EU: a low fair-use cap abroad, a tablet without a plan, or no Swedish subscription at all. Then 3 to 5 GB covers an ordinary trip.
Practicalities on arrival
Switch the line on, enable its data roaming, and turn data off on the Swedish subscription so the phone does not hop back.
Vatican City and San Marino are separate states but sit on Italian networks, so you notice nothing when crossing the border.

- Yes. Both are part of Italy and covered by the same rules as the mainland.
- When does validity start counting?
- When the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy or install it. You can prepare well in advance without losing days.
- Can I make calls with the eSIM?
- No, it is data only. Call over WhatsApp, Messenger or FaceTime, or keep your Swedish number active for ordinary calls.
