Networks and coverage
Telcel has by far the widest coverage in Mexico. AT&T Mexico and Movistar work well in cities and tourist areas but thin out faster in the countryside.
The coast between Cancún and Tulum is well covered, as are Mexico City, Oaxaca and Guadalajara. Inland Yucatán, around cenotes and at smaller ruin sites, often has no signal at all.
How much data do you need?
5 GB covers a two-week trip of maps, bookings and messaging, assuming hotel wifi handles the heavy lifting.
Driving between states with heavy navigation makes 10 GB the more sensible level.
Practicalities on arrival
Activate the line after landing and turn data off on your Swedish subscription. Mexican roaming from Sweden is expensive.
Download maps of Yucatán before driving out to the cenotes. The roads are small, the signs few and the coverage often nonexistent.
Common questions
- Does it work at Chichén Itzá and Tulum?
- At Tulum and the larger sites there is usually coverage. At smaller inland ruins you should not count on it.
- When does validity start counting?
- When the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy or install it. You can prepare well in advance without losing days.
- Can I make calls with the eSIM?
- No, it is data only. Call over WhatsApp, Messenger or FaceTime, or keep your Swedish number active for ordinary calls.
