Networks and coverage

Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom cover the country well. Turkcell has the strongest network in the east and in rural areas, and 4G reaches practically everywhere.

The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts have very good coverage, as do Istanbul, Antalya and Cappadocia. In the eastern mountains and parts of central Anatolia it grows sparser.

How much data do you need?

5 GB covers a two-week holiday of maps, messaging and bookings. Many hotels and restaurants have wifi, which brings the requirement down.

Travelling between cities with heavy navigation, or posting video, makes 10 GB the safer level.

Practicalities on arrival

Activate the line after landing and turn data off on your Swedish subscription. Turkey is one of the countries where Swedish roaming gets expensive quickly.

Turkey registers phone IMEI numbers, and a foreign phone used with a Turkish SIM is blocked after roughly 120 days unless registered. The rule applies to local prepaid cards rather than a travel eSIM, but it is worth knowing if you plan a longer stay.
