Do it at home, not at the airport

Installation downloads the profile over the internet. With no connection it cannot happen, and standing in an airport in a country where your data is switched off is exactly that situation. Install while you have wifi at home.

Installing early costs you nothing in validity. The clock starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy or install it.

iPhone

Open Settings, go to Cellular and choose Add eSIM. Pick Use QR Code and point the camera at the code you were sent. On iOS 17.4 and later you can skip the camera entirely: tapping the install link in the email adds the profile directly.

Once added, the phone asks what the line is for. Give it a name you will recognise, and keep your usual subscription for calls and texts.

Android

The route differs a little between manufacturers. On a Pixel: Settings, Network and internet, tap the plus beside SIM and choose Download a SIM instead. On Samsung: Settings, Connections, SIM manager, Add eSIM. Then scan the QR code.

After you land

Two settings need to be right. Set the travel eSIM as the line for mobile data, and switch data roaming on for that line. It sounds backwards, but the eSIM is foreign as far as the network is concerned and needs roaming to work at all.

At the same time, switch data roaming off for your Swedish subscription. Otherwise the phone can fall back on it when the signal shifts, and that is precisely the bill you were avoiding.
